Joseph R. Toller

Joseph R. Toller, 82, passed away Saturday (June 8, 2013) at Marietta Memorial Hospital.

He was born Tuesday, Feb. 10, 1931, in Marietta, to the late Luther E. and Etta S. Stephan Toller. Joseph graduated from Marietta High School in 1949, Marietta College A.B. degree in 1959 and Ohio University M.Ed. degree in 1963. He served in the U.S. Air Force as a S/Sgt. in the Korean conflict.

He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, where he served as past lay leader and trustee, Joseph also was a certified lay speaker and served as pulpit supply for 28 Churches in Washington and Athens Counties. He was a life member of the Ohio Education Association, past president of the Marietta Education Association, former member of the Ohio Association of Elementary School Administrators as well as the National Association of Elementary School Administrators. He taught from 1959-1966 at Putnam School and served as the principal at the following schools, Marion and North Hills from 1966 to 1972; Putnam School from 1972 to 1976; North Hills, Putnam and Phillip Schools in 1982; Phillips School from 1982 to 1990.

His memberships included past president of Washington County Retired Teachers Association, director of District VIII Ohio Retired Teachers Association, Mayor’s Advisory Committee, Citizen’s Traffic Commission, City Board of Health, American Legion Post #64 and volunteered as a tour guide for the W.P. Snyder, Jr. Joseph’s Masonic affiliations included president of Marietta Masonic Building Company; past master in 1961 and former secretary of American Union Lodge #1, F.&A.M.; secretary of American Union Chapter #1, Royal Arch Masons; recorder of Marietta Council No. 78, Royal & Select Masons; recorder of Marietta Commandery No. 50, Knights Templar; secretary/treasurer of 9th Arch Cryptic Association (R.&S.M. of Ohio); member of Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Cambridge; Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, Aladdin Temple (Columbus, Ohio.) and Marietta Shrine Club; secretary/treasurer of Marietta Shrine Club Holding Corporation and was a member of Order of Eastern Star Chapter No 59.

In 1972, he was married to Frances Hyde Miller and she survives with two daughters, Jody F. Toller Wong (Jun Wah) and Paula A. Martin; and one son, Jay B. Miller; six grandchildren, Jacob, Noah and Lucas Wong, Leslie Higgins, Cory, Kaitie and Emily Huff; one great-grandson, Stephen Higgins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, William L. Toller.

Funeral services will be held at Hadley Funeral Home Reno Chapel on Tuesday (June 11) at 11 a.m. Friends may call at Hadley Funeral Home Reno Chapel today (June 10, 2013) from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Burial will be in East Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Masonic services will be held at 8 p.m. today.
