William D. Harter Sr.
William D. Harter Sr., 81 of Ravenswood passed away Thursday, Sept. 29, 2016 at Marietta Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Marietta on Aug. 10, 1935, the son of the late Edwin W. and Ethel R. (Dunham) Harter, and he grew up in the Marietta area.
Bill graduated from Vincent High School and Morris Harvey College. He served his country in the U.S. Army and served in France from 1955 through 1957. He retired from the U.S. government as an auditor after working at GAO and the Department of Health and Human Services.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother Norman Harter and sisters Ruth Huntington and Frances Schultz, and daughter Kimberly J. Harter.
His wife, Virginia Jewell (Bailey) Harter survives him along with two sons, William D. Harter Jr. of Vincent and David W. Harter of Parkersburg and daughter Brenda L Baker of Lowell. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, at the Waybright Funeral Home, Ripley, with Carson Bevil officiating. Military rites provided by the Jackson County Honor Guard will follow the service at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Riverview Cemetery, Williamstown. Friends may call on the family from 11 a.m. until the time of service at 1 p.m. at the funeral home.
