Gary E. Schafer
Gary E. Schafer, 80, of Marietta, OH, passed away on Tuesday, April 4, 2017, at Marietta Memorial Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was born on September 27, 1936, in Monroe County, OH, to the late Wayne A. and Mildred Ring Schafer.
Gary was a U.S. Army veteran, and was privileged to guard the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery and served as a bodyguard for both President Eisenhower and President Nixon. He started at a young age working at the family business, Schafer’s Sohio Service Station, and then proceeded to own and operate Schafer Gulf where he served the community wrecker service. He later went on to work for and retire from Family Ford. Gary was a member of the Jaycees and loved softball, fishing, hunting, his 1957 Chevy, spending time with his family and attending all of his grandchildren’s sporting events.
Gary was a member of the First Baptist Church, the Williamstown American Legion #159 and the Marietta Moose Lodge #1823.
He is survived by his wife, Bonita “Bonnie” Casto Schafer, whom he married on June 3, 1962, and their two daughters, Lynn Erb (Jeff) and Laurie Neader (Rusty); six grandchildren, Jansen Mossack, Jessica Mossack, Jaelyn Erb, Brett Neader, Brooke Neader and Courtney Neader; and two great grandchildren, Cali and Ari. He is also survived by a brother, Donald “Donnie” Schafer (Sandy) and a sister, Mary “Butchie” Denton (Jim).
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Carol Ann Mercer and a son-in-law, Brad Mossack.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 8, 2017, at Hadley Funeral Home Reno Chapel, 1021 Pike St., Marietta, with full military honors to follow. Visitation will be held from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. on Friday, April 7, at the funeral home.
