Thomas W. Heiss

Thomas W. “Sled” Heiss, 60, of Waterford, died on Friday, July 28, 2017, at Marietta Memorial Hospital.

Tom was born on July 16, 1957, in Marietta, Ohio, the sixth son of Fred and Rosemary Brooker Heiss.

He resided in his parent’s home until his peaceful death. He graduated from Waterford High School and the Washington County Career Center in Autobody in 1975. He then worked for Central Ohio Coal in reclamation. In September of 1977, Tom survived a life changing car accident. Through his many years of rehabilitation, his courage and strength to learn to walk and talk again and his desire to be as independent as possible, Tom taught many the true meaning of perseverance. He touched all who came to know him, family, friends and caregivers, whether it was through his fighting spirit, humorous statements or stubbornness. It was through Tom’s journey that many learned compassion.

Tom is survived by his mother, Rosemary Heiss of Waterford; 15 brothers and sisters, Joseph Heiss of Beverly, James and Cindy Heiss of Woodland, Tenn., John and Mary Ann Heiss of Waterford, Gene Heiss of Lowell, Dan Heiss of Beverly, Alberta and Bill Wesel of Marietta, Cecilia Sciance of Waterford, Toby Heiss of Lowell, Julie and Brian Wilson of Lowell, Jennifer and George Holmes of Swanee, Ga., Alva and Debra Heiss of Beverly, Ellie and Mike Tullius of Beverly, Tony Heiss of Waterford, PJ and Buck Stanley of Waterford and Lucy and Brad Duff of Lowell; sister in-law, Ginny Heiss of Waterford; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father; two brothers, Jerry Heiss and Maurice Heiss; grandparents, Albert and Ella Brooker and Joe and Deliliah Heiss.

Thomas will forever be remembered by all those he touched with his unique sayings, ornery smile and fighting spirit. It is now that we rejoice in his walking the streets of gold with his savior Jesus and those whom have gone before us.
