Wayne ‘Steve’ Stephens

Wayne “Steve” Stephens, 91, passed away on July 14, 2017, at the Marietta Memorial Hospital.

He was born Feb. 4, 1926, in Macedonia, Ohio, a son of the late Wilbert A. and Azalia (Strahl) Stephens. He resided in Marietta and Newport, Ohio.

Mr. Stephens is survived by his wife, Ella (Carpenter) Stephens, who he married on May 6, 1948. He is also survived by two sons, Jerry (Marjorie) Stephens and Larry (Tammy) Stephens; eight grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two great grandchildren, Chelsea Stephens and LCPL Joshua Taylor.

Mr. Stephens served in the United States Navy for two years during WWII, where he trained as a gunner and was assigned to the U.S. Marina Roskova liberty ship. In 1950, he enlisted in the United States Army and was an instructor in the automotive training school, where he served in Korea for 14 months.

Mr. Stephens was a member of the Newport Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and trustee. He was also involved with the Newport Community Food Pantry and the Newport Water Board.

Services will be held Wednesday, July 19, 2017, at 11 a.m. at the Ingram Funeral Home in St. Marys, W.Va., with Pastor Doug Brown officiating. Interment will be in the Newport Cemetery, Newport, Ohio, with military graveside rites. Friends may call from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday and from 10-11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Newport Baptist Church, Deacon’s Fund, or Building Fund, or Newport Community Food Pantry.

The family would like to thank the nursing staff at Marietta Memorial Hospital and Selby General Hospital, especially the fourth floor nurses and hospice, for the excellent care of Mr. Stephens and his family that they received during his illness.
