Graham Metzger

Graham Metzger, 92, of Parkersburg, WV died peacefully on Monday September 4, 2017 at Wyngate Assisted Living. He was born in Parkersburg, WV to the late Carl A. and Gladys (Graham) Metzger. He lived independently in a historic home in Marietta, Ohio until about the time he was 90.

He graduated from Parkersburg High School and was a United States Army veteran, having served in the European Theater during World War II. Though he never wanted much personal recognition, he was nobly awarded the Purple Heart for his service to his country. After his service, he spent time in New York City. He loved to reminisce about his times in the big city and had plenty of great stories to share about his life in the Big Apple. In 1946, he graduated from Marietta College with a degree in Music. He retired from E.I. DuPont after twenty five years of service. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church and served as an organist at various churches in the area. He enjoyed collecting antiques and had a love for the outdoors, especially for tree preservation. He was a member of the Marietta City Tree Commission.

Graham is survived by his close family friends the Bailey and Huffman families. His legacy will live on for generations, as he has a namesake in both families. He will be remembered for his love of music and the magical transformation that occurred when he sat at the piano. Graham was a sharp dresser with a love of Schnauzers. Even into his tenth decade of life he was an avid reader, reading multiple books per week.

In honoring his wishes, his body has been donated to science. A graveside service will be held at a later date at Parkersburg Memorial Gardens. Please read a book, plant a tree, pet a dog, or raise a glass of bourbon and bitters in his honor.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Wyngate for providing such compassionate care and comradery and the staff of Amedisys Hospice for ensuring that Graham’s passing was as peaceful and comfortable as possible. Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg is assisting the family with arrangements.
