Crackdown on Internet cafes can eliminate law breakers
When it comes to gambling and the law, Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine is right to be mounting a campaign to assist local police departments in cracking down on “Internet cafes.”
Many such businesses are thinly disguised electronic gambling dens. They are illegal. A state appeals court in Cleveland upheld illegal gambling convictions involving three Internet cafes last month.
They are spread throughout Ohio and, despite all the evidence, operators of some of them insist they are legal.
Another defense is that the facilities provide jobs and otherwise boost local economies. Nonsense. Money not gambled away at Internet cafes probably would be spent otherwise, also helping the economy. The only real winners are owners and operators of the gambling outlets.
DeWine and law enforcement agencies throughout Ohio should make it a priority to shut down the illegal gambling houses.
