Ice cream social good for taste buds and community

The annual Broughton’s Ice Cream Social is planned for 2 to 6 p.m. July 21, and we hope you’ll be there.

We hope you’ll be there to support Healthy Kids Appalachia and the Southeastern Ohio Food Bank. Behind these organizations is the Hunger Solutions task force, a group effort by Marietta College, Marietta memorial Hospital and Peoples Bank to end hunger in Washington County. Proceeds from this year’s ice cream social will go toward expanding the reach of these programs.

Each year, the Broughton’s Ice Cream Social benefits a worthy cause. We can find no other cause more worthy than feeding the hungry and looking for ways to educate local residents about the need for good nutrition. Washington County food pantries which are already members of the Southeastern Ohio Food Bank also gain to benefit from the July social.

In 29 years, the social has raised more than $450,000 for 38 different organizations. They include Ewing School, The Right Path for Washington County and more. Broughton’s donates the ice cream, supplies and equipment needed for the event, the J.M. Smucker Co. donates toppings for more than 10,000 sundaes and the Marietta Brewing Co. will make the rootbeer used in more than 5,000 rootbeer floats. Various service organizations in the county will provide hundreds of volunteers to scoop ice cream and help out throughout the afternoon.

We urge everyone to attend the social, which in addition to ice cream features hours of live entertainment, and thanks to all who volunteer to make the day a success.
