Possibilities aplenty for city’s half marathon

There’s still time to sign up for Marietta’s first half marathon, scheduled for Oct. 1, and we encourage anyone who’s able to do so.

For those who can’t do the full half marathon, there are shorter race options and walkers are also allowed.

It’s the first race of its kind in the city and it’s important to ensure the effort is successful so that it may become an annual event. Starting new and different events in Marietta is important for local involvement and for bringing in visitors. We’re glad to see local officials coming up with something new to try in the city, especially an option that promotes healthy lifestyles.

There is a successful half marathon in Parkersburg each August and there’s no reason those participants can’t also come to Marietta to race. We think the two events, one in summer and one in fall, could complement each other nicely.

The money raised by half marathon registration fees will go toward improvements at Washington Community Playground, a playground used by Washington Elementary School and the community.

But if the race becomes a successful moneymaker it could support a different local project each year and really make a difference in multiple neighborhoods.

The race committee has selected what seems to be a great route for the event. It includes a small section in downtown Marietta and a long section on Glendale Road and Glendale Extension, which will be peaceful and scenic.

The Ohio River Sternwheel Festival and the Washington County Fair are longtime favorite events in the area, along with others. We hope residents will also support something new.
