Proposal on armory space worth pursuing

We think a proposal heard this week by Marietta City Council about the addition of an entrepreneurial education center at the armory is a win-win-win.

It would help satisfy grant funding requirements, would provide a little rental income to the city and provide a real service to the community.

The space would actually be rented by Building Bridges to Careers, which works with local schools. The group proposed renting a total of 1,200 square feet of the armory’s ground floor for $3,000 per year with an in-kind exchange of advertising and marketing services valued at $6,600.

The goal of the project is to bring in small businesses to be housed within the center and mentor students while also participating in business development courses through the BB2C programs.

It took many years for the armory to be renovated into a usable space but since it has had areas available for rent, there haven’t been too many takers. Although renting this space for this purpose wouldn’t be a big money-making endeavor, it’s a better alternative than continued empty space.

And even more importantly, this particular renter can help students and entrepreneurs alike with this concept.

Students will be able to see career pathways they might not have imagined before and businesses can get their start there. Business incubation leading to success benefits the whole community.

We hope city council and the city’s administration work to make this happen in the armory.
