Jobs for US sounds like a good thing
President-elect Trump has garnered lots of headlines for aving 1,100 jobs at the carrier Corp. in Indiana.
Of course, the employhees are happy. They were facing a financial Armageddon with the company opting to move their jobs to Mexico.
Trump made a big point of Carrier leaving the U.
S. and said those jobs wouldn’t be going anywhwhere. His opponents pointed with derision. His allies said don’t doubt him after all he is the author of “The Art of the Deal.”
Well, what do you know, those jobs are staying. Could this be the start of a trend? We hope so.
America’s economy has been losing jobs for years. Cheaper labor is a big reason. But there’s also lax pollution laws elsewhere, tax advantages, and sweetheart deals from suitors who covet hundreds of new jobs, even if it drains commerce from America’s once vibrant industrial centers and small town factories.
Monday morning quarterbacks are complaining about the cost of allowing Carrier to stay (special enticements, etc.). But aren’t we just turning the tables on nations that were only too eager to grab good paying jobs.
So, let’s just see how this first volley in this economic tug-of-war evolves as the Trump administration takes over.
Maybe there’s more good news down the road.
