Engineering Day a good place to start learning

High school students from around Washington County got a chance to learn last week for the Epicenter’s Discover Engineering Day,

The Epicenter sent out a call to invite each local school to send interested students to the day’s events. The Epicenter is an entrepreneurial and education center based around real world work experiences.

For the record, 26 students participated in Thursday’s exercise. The event was sponsored by Burgess and Niple, an engineering and architectural firm with an office in Parkersburg.

It’s good to know that the students learned about engineering opportunities in Ohio, West Virginia, and across America.

Students attended from Belpre High School, Frontier High School, Williamstown High School, Warren High School, Waterford High School, Marietta High School and Shenandoah High School.

Students participated in some real-life exercises such as building a bridge. Their interest in math and science can pay off, if they get the proper training beyond high school.

The other two activities consisted of a question-and-answer forum about engineering and an electric engineering exercise where students used resources to try and get music to play through electric circuits.

It’s good that high school students in our area of Appalachia get exposed to potential career training. The seeds planted Thursday may flourish in future years into a profitable and useful career. And the students can say they got their start at Discover Engineering Day.
