Farm Safety Week means staying safe

This is Farm Safety Week, a time for all workers and families connected to agriculture to re-dedicate themselves to safe habits.

It can be something as simple as making sure power equipment is turned off and wheels of power gear are blocked. Keeping all power equipment in working order is another important factor to consider.

Farmers also should be aware of what’s around them and where other people are positioned while running equipment.

And taking care of yourself while working is vital: Wearing earplugs, sunscreen and safety eyeglasses, for example.

Also consider these tips when working with animals:

≤ Have an escape route. Animals, like humans, can become aggressive, especially if an offspring is involved, and you need to be able to get to safety as quickly as possible.

≤ Keep cattle calm when handling them and never turn your back on a bull.

The Ohio Commission on the Prevention of Injury ranks agriculture among the top three most hazardous occupations in the United States. So, realize the dangers and work to make every week Farm Safety Week.
