The games foster much good will
This week, billions of eyes turn toward Pyeongchang, South Korea, as the 2018 Winter Olympics gets under way.
In the coming weeks, athletes from around the world will compete for glory and honor, representing their home countries in a variety of competitions in an effort to determine who is the best of the best.
It’s a tradition that dates back to the times of ancient Greece, when city-states, tired of conflicts, looked for a more peaceful way to settle differences. While much has changed during the thousands of years since, it’s an ideal that has survived.
The Pyeongchang Games will no doubt have a flavor all their own, one that reflects Korean tradition and heritage, while welcoming different cultures from around the world.
There will be much excitement and entertainment during the next two weeks, from the spectacles of the opening and closing ceremonies to competitions and pageantry in between. And, while we already are familiar with the names and faces and stories of the top athletes who will represent the United States — Lindsey Vonn, Shaun White, Chloe Kim and Mikaela Shiffrin all come to mind — we’re sure that new names will emerge with captivating stories to share as the competition unfolds.
As for politics — it’s the Olympics, after all, and you can be sure they will be accompanied with the usual intrigue and suspense that comes with all events that are global in nature.
We wish all of the athletes well as they prepare to compete, and look forward to seeing who will bring home the gold.
