United Way appreciates support at kick off

On Friday evening, Sept. 6, at Don Drumm Stadium, the United Way of Washington County “kicked off” their 2013-14 campaign at the second annual United Way Bowl, sponsored by BSN Sports. The two competing teams were the Marietta Tigers and the Warren Warriors who have been historical rivals. Just before the game began, the United Way of Washington County introduced their 18 agencies, as over 100 volunteers and staff members marched around the track with their agency banners.

This event could not have been possible without the tireless efforts of many. The Marietta Tiger Athletic Boosters graciously allowed the United Way to conduct their customary 50/50 raffle and keep the proceeds. The Marietta cheerleaders made a donation from funds they raised through their Future Cheerleaders Camp. BSN Sports provided special United Way Bowl T-shirts for the United Way to sell to those attending the game. Members of the Marietta and Warren High School student councils circulated throughout the stands collecting donations from each fan base. During the game, United Way Board members counted donations, and intermittently, would let the crowd know which community was in the lead. Warren won the game, receiving the United Way Bowl Trophy for the second year. Marietta fans donated the most money, winning the Fan Appreciation Trophy. Both communities were well represented!

The most impressive part of the evening was that so many people had joined together, volunteered their time, and made the effort to make this such a successful, fun event. This is another example of how Washington County is able to “Live United”! With the help of the fans, United Way Board members, agency marchers, cheerleaders, student council members, coaches, football team captains, the football teams, high school principals, parents, and volunteers, they made this event a wonderful United Way of Washington County kick-off.

On behalf of the United Way of Washington County, “thank you!”
