We must take care of our aging veterans

With Memorial Day upon us once again, we remember those that gave their lives for our country and our way of life.

Memorial Day is observed every year on the last Monday in May. It was established in 1868 after the Civil War as Decoration Day when the nation decorated the graves of the war dead and brought them to mind.

Although Memorial Day is a day set aside for those that did not come home, we can also honor them by taking care of those that did come home.

On an individual level, make sure that you take the time to thank a veteran when you become aware of one in your presence. Typically, veterans do not like to talk much about their service time. While we need to respect their desire to keep these experiences private, a simple “thank you for your service and sacrifices” is always appreciated.

Another way we can ‘thank’ a veteran, it to make sure we cherish the freedoms this country provides and for which these men and women fought. Our rights and freedoms are the reason that so many immigrants are trying to get here. This is a powerful testimony of what a precious gift these freedoms are. Protecting our rights for future generations means our vet’s sacrifices were not in vain.

Finally, as a country, we promise our veterans some benefits: disability compensation, veteran pensions, free or low-cost medical care, education, housing and home loan guarantees, job training, small business loans, burials and memorials, PTSD support as well as the Veteran’s Aid & Attendance benefit – a benefit that can be used for in-home care.

Many veterans are unaware of the Aid & Attendance benefit so if you are a friend or family member of an aging veteran or their spouse, you can help by making them aware.

Comfort Keepers of the Mid-Ohio Valley will do its part by helping our veterans to determine eligibility for this program through a greatly simplified process. Call our offices at 740-373-7125 or 304-343-5800 and let us know you would like to find out about the Aid & Attendance Benefit for Veterans and determine eligibility.

We can truly thank our veterans for their services by acknowledging the sacrifices made for us when we deliver on the promises made by our country to these brave men and women. May God bless our military and keep them safe.
