Brooker has energy, desire to be judge

Elect Shoshanna Brooker judge of Washington County Court of Common Pleas. Currently magistrate of the very court where she is seeking the position of judge, Brooker works with family cases that include some of the most important matters effecting families today – for example drug addiction. Called “drug courts” in the press, I heard Brooker speak briefly about “specialty dockets” which is the legal term for the concept around the idea of “drug court.” This is where the court focuses on treatment, not penalties. Here the judge reserves a morning or afternoon for cases around a particular issue or issues. The judge meets with those involved and seeks to help defendants coordinate treatment and resolve conflicts. The whole idea is to help people get better rather than just fining them or sending them to jail although this can be done if the situation warrants it. This is especially relevant to Brooker’s work with family cases such as addiction, domestic violence, and child support to name a few problems that are destroying families. I am so glad that our local court system is considering “Specialty Dockets.”

I did a little research on the concept of “Specialty Dockets” and the way I understand it the local court has to apply to have a “specialty docket.” It does take more resources but I think the idea to combine a number of family issues in order to combine resources is an interesting cost saving idea. She understands the importance of establishing “specialty dockets” that address these family issues because these problems are destroying Washington County families which includes all of us.

Brooker is well-qualified and has the experience to do this job as judge of Washington County Common Pleas Court. A graduate of Capital University of Law School she returned to her Marietta home to give back. She has had a private practice for 12 years but it is her job as Magistrate that is particularly relevant here. Plus Brooker is from a sixth generation family of Washington County and her grandfather was a county commissioner so she has the history for public service in her blood.

Please vote for Shoshanna Brooker for judge of Washington County Court of Common Pleas. She has the experience, the energy and the desire to make the court system work for all of us in Washington County.
