Mallett deserves support for school board

On Nov. 7, the voters of the Marietta City School District will be asked to elect the most qualified candidates to our local school board. Doug Mallett, whose distinguished business career and undying passion for the welfare of our community’s children, is clearly the right person for the job!

In order to choose the best candidate to meet the responsibilities of the position, the role of a school board member should be carefully understood. Per the Marietta City Schools website, the board of education for the Marietta City School District is a policy-making group with oversight responsibilities to provide sound public education opportunities to the young people of our community. According to the National School Boards Association, the four major areas of function for a school board are to facilitate vision, structure, accountability, and advocacy. Along these same lines, the Ohio School Boards Association states that board members are to make decisions on many different policies, some of which include: hiring of key personnel for district leadership (superintendent and treasurer), setting district policy, goal setting and long-range planning, good fiscal stewardship, and promoting community relations, just to name a few.

Of the seven candidates seeking election, Doug Mallett is held in high regard throughout Marietta for both his personal character and his business skills set. These things combined will enable him to work effectively as a Marietta City Schools board member. Mallett’s accomplished career in executive finance and asset management with Marietta Savings Bank, Mallett Rentals, and now Farrar Scientific aligns very strongly with the school board’s responsibilities of policy oversight, good fiscal stewardship, advising district leaders and developing strategies for the long range needs of our district. In regard to advocacy for our community’s children, Mallett’s role as past chairman of the Washington County Children’s Services Board and current role as a co-founder of the Washington County Foster Families Foundation speak to his unwavering dedication to providing resources to the children in our community who need them the most. Mallett’s experiences in serving our community also include a long history of civic and charitable engagement, which directly correlate to promoting community relations, and are fundamental responsibilities of being an effective school board member.

Please strongly consider the importance of your vote, “Mark your Ballot for Mallett,” and elect Doug Mallett to the Marietta City Schools Board of Education. Your vote will be one that positively benefits Marietta City Schools and, more importantly, the children and families that it serves.
