We need to wake up to the ‘vandal in our midst’

Well the heinous deed is almost done; Bernie Sanders calls this Republican tax bill “The biggest act of thievery in the modern history of this country.” An immense transfer of wealth from the bottom up; the obscenely rich will get more billions to hoard, the rest of us will get a charade of false promises and outright lies. Bitter gruel indeed.

Republicans even concede that they have no choice but to pass this hateful piece of legislation, for if they don’t, their billionaire campaign donors will desert them. Amazing. And Senator Marco Rubio even goes so far as to brazenly admit that this will create a huge deficit that they will use as an excuse to cut Social Security and Medicare. Nice guys, huh?

Now let’s switch our focus to Donald Trump’s trip today. He’s going to Utah to perpetrate another dirty deed; the drastic reduction of two of our magnificent national monuments, so that the fossil fuel industry can turn these natural treasures into toxic ruins. According to former Secretary of the Interior, Bruce Babbitt: “He’s a vandal in our midst, coming in person to lay waste to the land.” Amen. He goes on: “This theft of our heritage should awaken us to the damage being piled up across our public lands under this administration.”

The words “should awaken us” are key here. Most of us are wallowing in apathy, waiting for someone else to come along and save us from this corrupt, mentally unstable person in the White House, and the congressional Republicans that enable him. They are way out of control, and are putting this country, and the world at large, in serious peril. If we don’t organize massively, and remove them from office, we will lose everything we hold dear.

Now is most assuredly the time to “ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.” We need to be our own heroes; we need to dig deep, bring out our best qualities, and use them to make the world a better place. And if you are in need of a role model; if you want to read about a true American hero, I recommend: “Bobby Kennedy: A Raging Spirit”, by Chris Matthews. If you love honor, and if you prize courage; you will love Bobby Kennedy.
