The final span of the 85-year-old Williamstown Bridge fell, causing minor damage to several homes at the foot of the bridge in Williamstown.

The Marietta Evening Lions Club will hold its third annual White Cane day from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, April 1, and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, April 2, at the Marietta K-Mart and the Kroger Co. Donations will go back into the community for sight-saving programs. Eye glasses and used hearing aids will also be accepted.

The Coast Guard’s Marine Safety Detachment in Marietta closed its doors. This closure is part of the service’s nationwide cutback to save money. The closure will eliminate four military jobs and save the Coast Guard $141,000 annually.

The Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps will be featured as part of Marietta’s 200th birthday celebration. The corps will perform twice on April 9 in conjunction with the First American Regiment’s commemorative activities and Broughton Foods Co.’s “Happy Birthday Marietta” party. The events will be held in Marietta’s East Muskingum Park.
