BEVERLY — More than two years after the resignation of its last superintendent, the Fort Frye Local School District hired a new district leader Monday.
The board of education unanimously voted on a
2 1/2-year contract for Matthew Dill, 31, currently a principal in the Bloom-Carroll Local district east of the Columbus metropolitan area.
“It’s nice to have it done,” said board President Zack Waite. “Although Dora Jean (Bumgarner) has done everything we could have asked for.

Fan friendly?
Mon, January 5, 2009 @ 12:32PM
I'm writing just hours before Ohio State takes on Texas in in the Fiesta Bowl. I already know I'll never make it to the end of the game. That's because the game will starts after 8 p.m. With all the commercials, they will be lucky to be done by midnight. That's too late for me and I figure quite a few other sports fans I know TV money rules the sports world. It's just too bad, in my op opinion. I . I go back to my childhood , when World Series games were played in the afternoon. and we'd sneak a listen on our transistor radios in the back of Mr. Tarantino's sixth grade classroom in Warrensville Hts. outside of Cleveland. I'm not against nighttime sports, mind you. I can remember when New Year's Day was the big finale to the college football season and the Orange Bowl was often a fight for the national title. I managed to stay awake long enough to catch the end, then drag myself off to school the next morning because New Year's Day meant Christmas vacation was over ..

Spoilers 'Happen'
Wed, December 31, 2008 @ 6:22PM
This week I finally got around to watching “The Happening.” Usually I'm there on opening weekend for an M. Night Shyamalan movie, but I never made it to the theater. I was eagerly anticipating the video release in October, but before I had the chance to watch it, someone spoiled it for me. This wasn't one of those inadvertent, fleeting comments that gives away the ending or a part of the story. This was a full discussion of the movie's plot and who lived and died (and even how). I was at an event where several people were discussing movies and a few began to talk about “The Happening.” I said I hadn't seen it and tried to politely convey that I didn't want to know how it ended, but apparently I didn't get that idea across. The best thing about Shyamalan's movies is the atmosphere, a lot of which comes from not knowing exactly what's going on.

Political endorsements
Fri, October 24, 2008 @ 2:21PM
This week, The Marietta Times will begin publishing its endorsements of candidates. You may have noticed we've already run editorials against the casino issue in Ohio and in support of the local mental health levy for children. In the days leading up to the Nov. 4 election we will run endorsements for individual candidates at the local, state and national levels. Our editorial board voices our opinions every day on issues important to this community. The endorsements are simply an extension of that. Our opinions are strictly that, opinions, but we hope they also help to inform and motivate our readers by provoking thought and sparking discussion. In many cases we've had the opportunity to sit down with candidates one-on-one. We've sorted through the information and we've discussed the candidates' strengths and weaknesses. We hope you'll consider the information provided in the endorsements prior to making your own decisions on Election Day.

What's in your purse? I got the ultimate mom purse as a Christmas gift and emptying the contents from my previous purse to the new one prompted me to wonder, "what do other women carry in their purses?" In my new ginormous faux leather handbag, I haul around the following on a regular basis: 3 tubes of lipstick, 2 tubes of chapstick, 4 tubes of lipgloss (OK, so I have a problem), sunglasses, eyeglass case, eyeglass repair kit, one pair of gloves, one tiny pair of purple mittens, huge lady wallet with nothing in it save for some change and many, many expired membership cards and business cards and old pictures, iPod, cell phone, whatever book I'm currently reading, partial pack of gum, keychain from hell (or the keychain of doom, if you prefer), checkbook, MACE (just in case you were thinking about stealing my checkbook), tiny tape recorder, hair clips, Advil, Tylenol, lady stuff, tooth whitener, hand cream, Head On (think what you will...

A search for a long lost grandfather
Wed, December 17, 2008 @ 11:26PM
For 47 years I have carried around a piece of a grandfather I never met. Arthur C. Smith was, like more than 400,000 other Americans, killed in World War II. He wasn’t a soldier, or in the Navy, or even a pilot. He was a sailor on a merchant ship. He died somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean when my dad was just a young boy. Less than 20 years later my parents would name me after him. I knew a little about my namesake from my father and my grandmother, but I knew very little about how he died. A few weeks ago I decided to use the Internet to see how much I could find out about the journey that ended so many years ago. Within perhaps 30 minutes I found out more information than I had been told in a lifetime. Armed with only our shared name and the name of the ship I learned the following. My grandfather was one of a 36-man crew that was aboard the U.S.
