Pothole season arrives
February 6, 2008 - Jim Bartholow
While there's lots of attention directed at the Ohio River today and for the next few days, I'd like to observe the start of pothole season. Now, there's no OFFICIAL date for these to appear. But anyone driving around town knows it's pothole season. Here are my Top 5 pothole places so far this season. 1. Pike Street around the Interstate 77 interchange. 2. Fourth Street by Marietta Memorial Hospital. 3. Ohio 7 to Newport. 4. Ohio 7 between Marietta and Belpre. 5. Virginia Street. I'm sure you have your own places to nominate. Let me know and I'll contact the city, county or state. Or you can call them yourself. I know from covering city government in the past that everyone wants their pothole filled yesterday. My advice is to be patient (the patching crews can only get what's called cold patch, which is a temporary fix, at certain times). And, be careful driving (assume there are potholes ahead and drive defensively.) The front end of your car will thank you.
Anybody know why we still call girls basketball teams the "lady" Tigers, Wildcats, Warriors, etc? To me, they should just carry the school mascot's names. Adding "lady" to the title seems condescending to me.
Finally, a personal thought. I'd like to thank everyone who offered a kind word to me and my family over the past week over the death of my mother-in-law Barbara Bailes. You words are most appreciated. Thanks.
