A helping hand

January 14, 2009 - Jennifer Houtman
Our sincere thanks to all of you who helped us help others in 2008.

The Marietta Times is a co-sponsor of two campaigns that help people in need during the winter months. Both were successful thanks to the generosity of this community.

The first, Send Help, is an effort to generate donations to Washington County food pantries. This year, more than $13,000 was collected. That money was dispursed to the nine local food pantries serving all corners of the county so they could purchase food. Because of you, more people will receive food this winter. The state of the economy is sending more people than ever to local food pantries for assistance, many for the first time. Your generosity helps to make sure the food they need is there.

The second program we were part of was the annual Coats for Kids campaign. Again, the community came out in a big way to support this effort. Volunteers collected more than 900 coats, almost twice the number collected last year. The good news - all of those coats went to families in need. You don't need the frigid temperatures of this week to know how important it is for people to stay warm, especially children. Thanks again to the many people who donated coats, and also to the schools and businesses which serve as collection points. It really is a joint effort.

News of recent layoffs means the need continues to exist and we urge everyone to look for ways to help those struggling in these economic times. The need for food continues through the year. Don't hesitate to donate directly to the local food pantries: Belpre Food Pantry, 423-2069; Beverly/Waterford Food Pantry, 984-2807; Marietta Community Food Pantry, 373-5741; Harvest Time Food Pantry, 865-9903; Newport Food Pantry, 473-2900; LAMB Food Pantry and Thrift Shop (Lowell), 309 Walnut St., Marietta Church of God Food Pantry, 373-4291; Tri-County Food Pantry (Lower Salem), 585-2143; and Western Washington County Food Pantry, 678-1065 or 678-2189.
