Submit your events directly to our calendars
March 22, 2009 - Art Smith
The newspaper and our Web site can be great ways to promote your upcoming community event. Being the community’s newspaper, we feel it is our duty to get the word out about events that may be coming up. For the past several years we have had a virtual newsroom on our site. Hundreds of people a month submit everything from news releases to engagement announcements through the site.
We also have a community event calendar on the site. Last weekend I was helping one of my daughters promote the upcoming Freshman Smorgasbord at Waterford High School. Acting as a reader would, I sent it into the newspaper through the Virtual Newsroom. Acting as the Webmaster for MariettaTimes.com I did something a reader couldn’t do, I added it to the community event calendar on our site.
A major upgrade to the site occurred mid-week. Most readers likely took little notice. The “engine” that drives the site was replaced. Since most people can’t look under the “hood” of our site, few would people would notice anything different.
One change though, could make a big impact to people wanting to promote a community event. With all our calendars there is now a link to “Submit A Calendar Event.” This link will take you to a page where you can submit an event to any of the calendars that we have on our site. All that we require from you is that you become a registered member of our site. That process is quick and easy, and only has to be done once. We will review the item, normally within a few hours, and then the item will become part of our site.
Being a registered member of our site has many other benefits. You can sign up for e-mail alerts, save content and comment on blogs, stories and polls. We currently have more than 5,000 registered members who have left more 32,000 comments on the site.
The addition of the calendar submission is the latest improvement as we strive to make our Web site an integral part of the community.
