Web site has a global audience

One of the things that has always intrigued me about the Web is the global nature of the readership of the media.
Printed news sources are restricted by how far they can physically deliver their product in a timely manner. Broadcast outlets are hampered by how far their signal will carry. Web news sources have neither of those restrictions. Only the connectivity and interests of the reader restrict the Web. Geography simply does not matter.
We use Google Analytics to gain knowledge about who is using MariettaTimes.com. The service does a remarkable job measuring when people use our site, what they read when they are on it, how long they stay and where they are physically located when making the visit.

• One of 209,929 people who visited the site in the last month.
• Likely in the United States. 99.12 percent of our readers are in the USA.
• Likely in Ohio. 39.22 percent of our total online audience is in the mountain state.
• They could also be in West Virginia. Google measures 28.26 percent of our readers as being West Virginia. A number thrown off slightly because the Analytic programs measure the geographic location of a person’s internet server, which for some Ohio readers may actually be in West Virginia.
• Likely at work. Sorry employers, our peak time is between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Of course people have different Internet habits and the world does have 24 time zones, so there is traffic to our site around the clock.
• Reads a lot. Our online readers read more than 945,277 pages on our site in the last month.
• Might be out of the country. Although the percentage is small, .88 percent to be exact, the number is large. Picture 1,800 people in your front yard asking you what is going on and you begin to get the picture.
I have always found the out-of-country group to be interesting. Particular when they reach out and contact me. A local worker busy on a project in Russia asked a question a few years ago. A soldier in Iraq e-mailed several times as well. He even stopped in to say hi when he got back to the area. We did a company-wide analysis of what countries people were in awhile back. We actually had 33 page views in a month from Antarctica.
Google represents visits to a site by putting a dot on a map. The bigger the dot, the more visitors. They also give you the raw numbers. The map is more fun.
Last month we had readers in 111 countries. Canada had more than 300. The United Kingdom, Germany, Australia, France, India and Japan and the Netherlands all had 50 visitors or more.
Readers in small countries came too. Botswana, Ghana, Togo, Moldova to name a few.
We can even tell what city they are in. For example, of the 49 visits from China, 31 of them came from Beijing.
We continue to make efforts to assure that both our readers here in Marietta and around the world find the news they are looking for.
