Pull the plug on 'Jon and Kate"
June 2, 2009 - Jim Bartholow
The TLC reality TV series "Jon and Kate Plus 8" used to be fun to watch. Taking care of 8 kids (twins plus sextuplets) is crazy, especially when I can't imagine how we raised two children 4 1/2 years apart. (Actually, I know how: the answer is Leslie, my wife, who kept us all on track. Thank you). But now the father and mother don't get along. They don't get along. Actually, it looks like they don't even tolerate being in the same room together. So now we have John plus 1 or 2 kids while Kate has the others, or the other way around. Anyhow, to mind, the show has lost its franchise as fun viewing. TLC should pull the plug, even though the rating for the show's season debut was HUGE (9 million viewers). I've tried to watch the new episodes, but the pain in these two adults is palpable, making the show unwatchable for me. Maybe it's just me, but the kids seem lost, too. Maybe it's that they are growing up. But a more plausible explanation in my mind is they are feeling the stress and pain of their parents, who feel put upon by being in the media spotlight. To quote Kate ... "Hello! Hello!" They star on a successful TV series. Do they think they can just blend in? Not now. Again, if they drop the TV gig, their fame will fade and their lives can return to normalcy, or at least as normal as they can be with 8 kids.
