New site give readers more ways to voice opinions

September 5, 2010 - Art Smith

With the recent revisions to the website came more ways for readers of MariettaTimes.com to voice their opinion about issues facing area residents.

For the last two and half years readers have been able to comment on most stories, blogs and polls on the site. They have done so at a vigorous pace. Since February of 2008 readers have left 81,433 comments on the more than 22,478 stories contained on the site.

With the revision of the site a few weeks ago we added the ability of readers to “like” or “dislike” the comments left by others on a story. So far readers have cast their likes or dislike of a comment from a fellow reader around 4,600 times.

We also added reader forums. Forums give readers a place to talk about topics that may not relate to a current news story. In simple terms, readers start a topic and then other readers chime in with their opinion. The forums have been a big hit on The Times site, with readers leaving hundreds of comments on topic ranging from “Union influence in politics” to “LeBron James decision could backfire on NBA business.”

Reader input on any website helps to bring the site alive and make it a more integral part of the community that it serves. Adding the additional features to The Times site is one of the many ways we are working to make sure all voices are heard.
