Gimme a break already
June 1, 2012 - Erin O'Neill
I have blogged before about my initiation into the world of roller derby as a member of the First Settlement Derby Dames. It's a hardcore sport and definitely not for the faint of heart.
I learned this lesson the hard way at a practice on May 7 when the sound heard round the world (or at least the confines of the Marietta Roller Rink) was the sound of my ankle cracking. It was a bimalleolar fracture with dislocation. Or in layman's terms, totally messed up. I required surgery and a plate with 11 screws. I am currently on cast number three.
To say it has been painful and inconvenient is putting it mildly. My blog about moving a while back? Yeah, that's not easy to do with one foot. In the meantime, getting back to work has been a learning experience. The end of school has also come and gone and the biggest event in my life has been watching "Hatfields & McCoys" on the History channel and mastering the stairs on a single crutch with the help of the handrail.
I have made myself hyper aware of my calcium intake — which, ladies, is super important — and am hoping to undertake a cross stitch project.
But there are looming projects that are just too daunting at the moment, mainly simple housekeeping (boy I'd love to run the vacuum) and packing. Pain in the ankle, yes, and parts a little northward, too.
Thanks to support from my family, a walker, a wheelchair and crutches emblazoned with skulls and cross bones, it is getting a little better. But it's gonna be a long road.
I'll be back, though, roller derby. You can't keep me down.
