Tags make pages easier to find

Nearly every person on the planet has now used a search engine. For most that means they go to Google and type in a few key words and what they are looking for pops up.
The magic behind returning exactly what you are looking for has made Google billions and has spawned the new "science" of search engine optimization.
If you operate a Web site you try very hard to supply the search engine what it wants. Google uses some 200 factors when rating sites, exactly how they use them remains a trade secret. Tons of books, articles, and web pages have been written to offer tips on how to make pages more search engine friendly.
It boils down though, to having good content and then letting the search engines index the site.
A good web site helps this task out by having special tags on a site.
One is called the page title, you might have notice it changing recently on different pages as we tweak our tags on MariettaTimes.com. The page title is what you see on the top of the page. The title is also what is saved by your browser when you bookmark a page.
The page title on our home, for instance is: News, Sports, Jobs, Community information - The Marietta Times.
The other tags you will not see unless you look at the code behind every page. One is called the description, it's a short paragraph about what a page is about, the other are keywords, which are the words people may used if looking for information.
Search engines are important to all sites, including MariettaTimes.com. In the last month search engines have accounted for 27.47 percent of our visitors (49,559)
