Site now offers social networking connection

August 28, 2008 - Art Smith
An explosive growth has occurred in the past few years in the use of social networking sites on the Web.

Social networking sites are simply sites where people that know each other, or have similar interest, can gather and share ideas and other things.

The two giants, Facebook and MySpace, have more members than most countries have people.

Most social networking sites operate is the same basic way. You set up a page and then allow your “friends” to see it. You approve “friendships” before they are added to your page. Once added, they can view photos that you post, leave comments on your “wall” and view your current status.

Once viewed as strictly an online tool for those under 25, social networking sites have become a great way for people of all ages to stay connected.

I’ve had an account on Facebook for while now, I am “friends” with several people older than I. In fact, one of the most active “Facebooker” I know is a retired Marietta College professor that posts information much more often most of my younger “friends” on the site.

The social networking sites are also a great way to reconnect with old friends. In the past several months several former co-workers have found me through my Facebook account.

Users can be part of networks on the site. The Parkersburg Network, for instance, has thousands of people in it. You can also join and set up groups both large and small. The Pittsburgh Pirates group has more than 12,000 members. A group set up by my daughter called “My dog’s name is Maggie” has just three members and they are all named Smith.

This week we added a new feature to our sites. On the bottom of every story on our site you will find a link that allows you to send any story to any friend that you have on any of nine social networking sites. You can even share a blog, just click on the link below to send this or any blog to your friends on Facebook, MySpace, Digg, Stumble, Buzz up!, Mixx, Fark, del.icio.us, or LiveSpace.

The addition is part of our continuing efforts to provide news and information to people when, where and how they want it.
