Who are these people claiming to be TV stars?

September 22, 2008 - Jim Bartholow
My first reaction in reading about Sunday night's Emmy Awards is: Who are all these people? I know I'm not into network TV, or much for cable either, but I have to admit I don't know anyone called a celebrity on the red carpet or awards podium. That's what I get for limiting my viewing choices to the news, The Weather Channel, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN Classic, ESPN News, The Food Network, "Law and Order: Criminal Intent," and "Rachael Ray." Oh, I can't forget about "Dancing with The Stars." I love that show. I'm dancing vicariously. Leslie can tell you about my dancing skills. Anyway, I don't expect my viewing habits to change. I remember as a kid that all we had were three channels in Cleveland _ ABC, NBC and CBS. And NO cable. That's the way it was in those days.

I guess I did a lot of radio listening as a kid. A lot of Cleveland Indians' games in the evenings. This was the era of Top 40 radio too. Hit songs were in heavy rotation on the radio and we could usually get four or five Top 40 stations. Since the stations followed the same formats, we'd try to get the same hit song playing at the same time on two radios. Created a neat effect. And if we had a 45 rpm hit record we'd try to synchronize it with the radio station to really create an echo. ... I know, it didn't take much to entertain me then. I guess that hasn't changed much over the years.
