Barbecue restaurant opens

Franchise manager Shane Stotts, front, and general manager Suzie Reynolds help prepare ribs at Bar-B-Cutie on Pike Street Friday.
The former Rax building will be the site of a new business, opening Saturday.
Bar-B-Cutie, a restaurant chain originating in Tennessee, will open on Pike Street at 10:30 a.m.
“It began in 1950, but the concept didn’t start growing until about 2003,” said Brett McFarland, a franchise representative from Tennessee, who came to Marietta Friday to help get the restaurant started.
Rax was one of the many buildings inundated in 2004, when the Ohio River crested nearly 10 feet above flood stage for the worst flooding in 40 years. Rax never reopened.
McFarland said even though the franchise has traditionally been located in southern states, he feels diversity in this area will help make Bar-B-Cutie a success here.
“If we were doing this 15 years ago, we would not have been comfortable,” McFarland said. “But as much as people move around today, we felt there is a very good saturation of a mixed community.
