’Jackets champs

Williamstown pitcher Drew Townsend threw a complete-game, two-hitter as the Yellowjackets defeated Parkersburg Catholic 3-0 for the Class A, Region I, Section championship Friday at Dave Wilson Field in St. Marys.
ST. MARYS, W.Va. —Drew Townsend relishes pitching in pressure-cooker situations.
The senior from Williamstown just happened to find himself in that position Friday afternoon and responded in spectacular fashion as the Yellowjackets clinched a Class A, Region I, Section 3 championship by defeating Parkersburg Catholic 3-0 at Dave Wilson Field. In his complete-game victory, Townsend allowed just two hits —both singles — and struck out seven, including four in one inning.
“With Drew being a senior (and working on two days rest), I was worried about him trying to be Superman — but he has done it before,” Williamstown coach Terry Smith said after his Yellowjackets improved to 25-5.
Townsend’s counterpart — Britt West of PCHS — also gave quite a performance after posting goose eggs for the first four innings. The Yellowjackets finally broke through in the top of the fifth inning. The first run of the game was set up when Justin Wajda doubled with one out.
