As the judges look over Brandon McAfee’s dairy feeder steer, Zee, at the Washington County Fair, there’s one thing they should know. “He’s just really nice,” said McAfee, 10, of Vincent, about his 610-pound friend. “I’m excited we’re here.” Along with the parade, the rides and all the food, the Washington County Fair is an event many area youth work toward for months as they prepare to show animals from the large and tall to the feathered and small. By Friday evening, the barns were bustling with activity as 4-H members brought in their projects in preparation for the fair kick-off Saturday. McAfee has high hopes for Zee after his entry last year was reserve champion, but for Jenell Betts, of Whipple, preparing two market lambs for the fair is all about the experience. “It’s OK if they don’t do well,” said Betts, 9. “It’s still fun. Last year I had one that got seventh and one that came in last and that was OK.
