Everyone loves the fair
A love of horses, riding skills and an appreciation of 4-H goals and programs have brought mother and daughter Patrice and Piper Tornes challenge, fulfillment and a common bond. Like her 13-year-old daughter today, Patrice Tornes of Marietta was also a rider; a member of the same 4-H club, Thundering Hooves; and also showed her horse at the Washington County Fair. The two even have had the same 4-H adviser, Maryanne Mitchell. “We’ve come full circle,” Patrice Tornes said. With all the festivities, bustling food concessions, noisy crowded midway, tractor pulls and demolition derbies, it is sometimes overlooked that the county fair is all about kids. Through 4-H and FFA combined, the community supports youth exhibits and projects to the tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars, buying large and small animals, including steers, lambs, goats and more. In 2005, for example, a total of $336,911.
