But Freddy, cite these lawsuits the NRA has mounted to prevent Connecticut lawmakers from enforcing the laws they passed. Cite the enormous pressure brought by Colt that prevented the same.
I've got your answer you were too lazy to seek out on your own. The California shooter took his older brother's shotgun. So, he's a thief too!

Freddy, I seem to remember the Columbine shootings went on DURING the time when the AWB was in place. The shooters, from well-off families, had enough disposable income to persuade 2 adults to buy their guns for them.
How did the kid in California get his guns? Beats me, I haven't seen news reports stating that fact.
Bu the majority of the mass shootings you speak of happened in "gun free" zones. In the case of the Arizona shooter, a CCW holder actually helped subdue the shooter.
One little problem with the "gun free" zone concept. Law abiding gun owners wouldn't be carrying a gun there, so it would be pretty tough for them to stop the shooter.

"False is the idea of utility that sacrifices a thousand real advantages for one imaginary or trifling inconvenience; that would take fire from men because it burns, and water because one may drown in it; that has no remedy for evils except destruction. The laws that forbid the carrying of arms are laws of such a nature. They disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crime." ~ Cesare Beccaria, quoted by Thomas Jefferson

Almost forgot - Did you read about the moron who shot himself in the ankle while playing with a gun at the recent gun-show at Comfort Inn? So much for your contention that the folks who attend these unregulated gun-fests are all "highly-competent experts in gun-safety"! Ha!

There have been around 71,000 cases of illegal gun purchases, but only about 70 have been prosecuted ... The NRA has also used its stooges in Congress to block Obama from appointing a new head of the ATF ... The ATF has been leaderless since 2007 ...

Also, show us where the NRA has supported ANY of the previous, mostly on-the-books, measures that might make such tragedies as Sandy Hook less likely ... Lawmakers in Connecticut have been blocked by NRA-sponsored lawsuits and threats from CT-based arms-mfg. companies like Colt from enforcing their stringent gun-laws (BTW none of these laws pose a threat to regular hunters and sportsmen) ... Oops! Looks like another shooting - this one in California (where there IS a ban on assault-weapons and clips), but the teen-shooter used a shotgun. Teens buying guns IS illegal in most states! How did he obtain his weapon? NO, I do not favor "banning" shotguns, but I DO favor beefing up school security. Arming teachers is NOT "school security", but just the opposite ... I think it's funny (and this topic certainly needs some humor) that, a few short months ago, you guys were bashing teachers, and now you want them to be packing guns!

mental-illnesses (and persons with guns who have persons living in their house who suffer from mental-illnesses), beefing up security at schools and ALL public-buildings, and (the only one NOT cuurently in force nationwide) closing the so-called "gun-show loophole" ... You two STILL won't tell us why you think you need a high-powered assault-weapon capable of firing 100 rounds in two-minutes? Aren't you guys getting lonely? I know that there are many more hiding out there who agree with your extremist position (i.e. NO restrictions on gun-ownership or use), but it seems they have better things to do - i.e. cleaning and fondling their "pieces"!

... Stick & Greek - Well, it looks like the pro-gun argument is being waged by only you two "alpha-type" dogmatists ... Here's a refresher - I did NOT say all guns should be banned. I did NOT say that there might be a few instances where a homeowner with a gun prevented a home-invasion (such an instance is reported in today's A.M. about a lady who shot a burglar). I said that none of the sixteen mass-shootings since February, 2012 (88 dead) were prevented or stopped by a gun-toting private-citizen ... All you two do is nitpick and parrot the latest NRA excuses for doing nothing ... There are exisiting laws in California, New York, and elsewhere that would have prevented Nancy Lanza from providing her idiot son with the tools to kill her and twenty-six innocent persons ... These include enforcing more comprehensive background checks, enforcing the laws prohibiting illegal gun-sales, restricting high-capacity magazines and clips, enhancing the database of persons with ment

Well Irish, I thought you capable of expressing yourself in language better than a text message. I guess not!
So, in your opinion, since a madman used stolen firearms to murder children, better than 1/3rd of America deserves punishment? Didn't we try this "ban" stuff before in our history? Aren't we still trying that futile effort to combat drugs? And how well is that working out for us? Didn't we repeal prohibition after learning it was impossible to force Americans to not drink alcohol?
I assure you, if such legislation is introduced, America will fight back! Legislators who support such a measure better be seeking an honest way to make a living, because they'll be voted out as soon as possible.
The honest, law abiding gun owners are not responsible for this crime. Where is your outrage at the ACLU, who forced the closure of mental institutions? Who brag about lawsuits where they won the right of mentally ill people to NOT take their medication if they chose not to?

Fred, clearly you have lost your mind! A 28 day waiting period? Why? You propose a restriction that will have zero impact on mass murderers. What, if they have to delay their killing spree, they'll change their mind? They'll lose the oppourtunity to kill lots of people if they have to wait 28 days?
There are TWO recurring criteria in these mass murders: 1. They are all "gun free" zones. 2. The murderers are mentally ill.
Yet, you on the left feel, since you have a tragedy, it's time to push your anti-gun agenda? What, is this another "Never let a crisis go to waste" moment?
Putting more restrictions on lawful citizens, as a "knee-jerk" reaction to Newtown, is as illogical as most everything you on the left push on America. Be ready to face resistance, LOTS of it! Be ready to face defiance! Because, even though you folks have rammed a ton of crap on America, Constitutional rights are non-negotiable!

My point is if a gun owner prevented it then it did not happen and there is no record of that person stopping it, usually. There are many cases of crime being prevented by a person using a gun. I have given references to this fact, unlike you Oniell. The mass murders have happened in gun free zones where a legal gun owner/carrier will not break the law and carry a gun to stop such an act.. WOW. I would draw you another picture but I don't think it will help. I think the density of your brain matter is such that it is incomprehensible to you..

Oniell. How do you say no mass killings were prevented by a gun owner??? There ARE indeed many cases of these being prevented. THEY DID NOT HAPPEN so there is no mass murders to report.

Gun shows are held on weekends, and buyers and sellers don't want to wait 28 days before the deal is concluded ... Many folks I know have purchased guns with no questions asked from private individuals who sell them out of the backs of trucks at flea markets across the hillbilly heartland ... This needs to be cleaned up, no matter how much is causes "discomfort" for the "I-want-my-guns-quick" nutjobs!

The only way to prevent mntally-deranged persons from obtaining these WMDs is to set up at least a 28-day waiting period and conduct extensive mental checks on the buyers of these weapons and ammo ... As the article states, dimwitted state officials want to cut back on the frequency of these checks - folks like me think they should be conducted more often!

... Again (as per the NRA standard talking points) you are purposely confusing regular criminal violence (which will always exist in some form) with the kind of senseless mass-shootings the nation has experienced since Charles Whitman fired those shots from the Texas clock tower in the late '60s (these have increased and become more prevalent since Columbine) ... Note that nearly ALL of these shooters have obtained their weapons-of-choice via legal channels - i.e. from dealers, the Internet, or from family members ... The reason these are MASS shootings is that the weapons involved were designed for MASS DESTRUCTION and for no other reason!

Freddie, I know it totally screws up your "talking points", but any dealers operating at a gun show have to require buyers to fill out a Form 4473, and call in the buyers personal info for the required background check.
Have you ever attended a gun show? I'm guessing the answer is NO! Because, if you had, you'd know there is typically a fairly high number of law enforcement officers in attendence at them. From local police right on up to BATFE agents.
Criminals don't buy guns at gun shows. A government study found the vast majority of criminals send a family member to legally buy them a gun. Or they buy it from another criminal who stole them from the owners home.

Fred, check the rate of gun violence in Jamacia, where there is NO private gun ownership. And they're an island, where their law enforcement could easily monitor everything that enters the country.
You like statistics so well, check out the DOJ's crime rate statistics for the past several years versus gun sales numbers. We've seen more firearms bought for around the past decade or longer. Yet, we're seeing firearms related violent crime rates drop.
Now, if as you claim, gun ownership by civilians is such an issue, how could crime rates drop? There are more privately owned guns, more civilians carrying for self defense, yet less firearms related crimes?
Oh, BTW, the cops being outgunned can't be a problem. The government is, and has been, arming police departments who requested them, "select-fire" M-4 rifles for many years. They're armory refreshed surplus military rifles, the "full auto" model M-4, the designation these days for the AR platform rifle. They're a

@Greek - So you're saying that teachers and other civilians need to engage in an "arms race" with potential killers armed with high-capacity weaponry? If he/she brings in an AK-47, the teacher needs a machine-gun or bazooka? ... In those "bad" old big cities you guys yap about, police are often out-gunned by the gangs. Why is this? Could it be because it's easy to send some "straw purchser" down to North Carolina to buy high-tech weapons and ammo in bulk from some gun dealers and/or gun-shows where no background checks are involved and "no questions asked" about why one wants these weapons?

I read the "I am Adam Lanza's mother" article & agree with most of her points - BUT Nancy Lanza (from all accounts) WAS a law-abiding gun-owner who was trained and followed all the rules but ONE - the rule that says mentallly-ill persons should not have access to guns, especially high-capacity assault weapons ... Duh!

@Greek and Stick - Since the gun-ban in the U.K. only 33 gun-homicides have occurred - compare that to the 14,000 that have occurred within the same time-period in the USA ... And - if one caught radio shock-jock Alex Jones on CNN's Piers Morgan last night (1/7/13), one would find all the proof they want that some gun-nuts are crazy ... More proof - of all the mass-killings since Columbine, NOT ONE has been prevented by gun-carrying civilians ... The $150. a session NRA "training programs" are bogus. They involve TWO hours of mostly target practice and do not teach skills needed in unusual circumstances ... The NRA (which once was a Boy-Scout-type gun-safety group) is now all about $$$ - money for bogus training & more and more money for gun sales for their corporate (Bush)masters in the lucrative gun industry ...
