Libertyforall - I think there are enough clues that an astute reader can guess why the former Health Commissioner was not renewed. If the department has been operating at a deficit for 3 years, she was given a 1 year contract after have been there for over 10, and then not renewed I think I can read between the lines. I don't need to see all the dirty laundry out on the line to know some house cleaning was probably in order.

Unlike the County Health Department, the City of Marietta does not have financial problems. If one health department were to "take over" another it should be the city taking over the county.

Fireman23, do you think it odd that after 17 or 18 years in that position they all of a sudden decided not to renew her contract. This without giving the Dr. any notification or reasoning, besides financial concerns. But now all of a sudden they have to fill three positions. What will the cost of these positions be. Why was Meckstroth not renewed. Somethins is remiss ont his issue. You seem to be well informed, but this is Marietta and County politics at work somewhere. Just seems odd and not all of the story is being told here.

LibertyforAll - First of all the director was not let go as in being fired, simply her contract was not renewed. By laws of the state of Ohio the health commissioner is under contract with the health department for a specified amount of time, no less than one year and not to exceed 5 years, the Washington County health board elected to have the commissioner on a one year contract. At the end of this year it was decided to not renew her contract. The health board meetings are open to the public and are on the second Tuesday of every month at seven pm at the health department. Anyone is welcome to attend.

Tessie - there is the Washington County Health Department and then there is a separate health department for both Belpre and Marietta that have nothing to do with Washington County.

First of all - Napster, you are correct. The health department was not created to to make a profit. It does however have to sustain it's self with enough money ahead to be able to purchase the needed supplies for running the health department, things like payroll, vaccine's and nursing and environmental department's supplies. This money also does the same for the dental clinic. If you have been following the health department any at all you will know that the health department has run in the red for the last 3 years.

I don't understand the statement about all the county health departments merging. Isn't there only the City of Marietta Health Department and the Washington County Health Dept? I think the County should absorb the City dept

I do not believe we, the public, are getting the whole story about the health department and why the former director was let go. Something is amiss. Living up to it's reputation, the Marietta Times, who only reports what they want or what someone gives them to print. The reporters need to dig deeper into the story and find out why the health department is in such disarray. Something is fishy.
