Changes in public health

Reactions to potential sharing of city and county services

January 14, 2013

Now is the perfect time for 3 health departments in our rural county to consolidate. Public health funding to support health departments is consistently being reduced. Revenue from clinical services at the health departments is decreasing. Reducing the duplication of services that all 3 health departments provide would save tax payer money without a reduction of services. In fact, services could be extended through the reduction in administration and overhead. Instead of paying 3 Health Commissioners, 3 Directors of Nursing, 3 Directors of Environmental Health, and 3 Medical Directors, only 1 of each would be needed, allowing more funds to go towards services for our local communities. Money could also be saved through the reduction of rent and utility for three health department offices. It's much better to consolidate before you are forced, because it can be on your terms. Consolidation WILL be forced by the State soon enough, and then it will be on the State's terms.

To DevilsAdvocate: When did you access the nursing department at the county health department? It is located in the Children's Home Building. Not a new facility by any means. I don't think the services would suffer if the two departments were combined. Even if the three were combined (Belpre has a city health department too)I think the turf war between the health departments should be stopped. The needs of the residents in the entire county should be the focus.

MrMister, you are a blind fool. The Sheriff sits way to the right, while the Joe sits way to the left. Duh... Next, I live in this City, & have taken my kids down to those nurses for shots every year. I used to have blood work done. The helmet program, senior checks, travel to Belpre, the blood mobile visits. They do tons of stuff with a shoe string budget. Now the county crew speaks for itself! Fancy buildings, blown budgets, lousy service when you visit, crabby women that often behave as though you are bothering... Sorry folks, the County seat has a heck of a good thing, while the county gasps for air. The commissioners & Sheriff could fix this in about 10 minutes by sharing thier hordes with the nurses. We'll see

Most counties the size of Washington County have a County Health Department that serves all, and there are no City Health Departments. The City of Marietta needs to close its health department and it needs to be absorbed into the county office. Services need to be combined into one department that services all Washington County citizens, and it needs to be operated by a strong board of directors. I'm tired of seeing all the various "boards" within both the county and the city who do nothing except impede progress. What, pray-tell, does Mr. Matthews know about public health?

Typical kasick, bush, republican crap! Cut services, while giving tax cuts to corporations and companies that dont need them! This country needs to take care of its citizens, not give them wars to fight!we need public health facilities along with mental health counciling to prevent tragedies like newtown! This nation does not have a spending problem, just a conservative problem!

Let me get this straight, Joe is worried about the "water down those services" effect if the 2 departments are combined and not that the County depart. has run in the RED for 3 years, staff has been cut and that money had to be "borrowed", (how does that get paid back?) to make payroll last month? Yep, typical democrat, keep the status quo and don't fix the problem, just*****more out of the taxpayers, via the County Commissioners this time; to keep things going. And Phillips, how good will the services be if there is no money for them? Unless you think continued "borrowing" is a great idea to keep things going. Doesn't work in my world but then I don't get to spend other people's money.
