A well is bored 5,000-8,000 feet down (5,280=one mile) then turned horizontally into the shale and bored up to two miles more. Holes are blasted in the horizontal pipes and water, sand and chemicals forced through at high pressure to fracture the shale and allow the gas to escape. This is called hydraulic fracturing or fracking. Each well can be fracked around 10 times. Productivity is huge at first (average of 4,300 million cubic feet per day) but drops off about 75% after the first year. The lifespan of a well is about 8 years. Wells sit on 5-acre excavated well-pads, and each well-pad can support up to 8 wells.

JoshBrown: I often wondered how long they would work the wells. If not long I could see down the road many of the worksites just rusting away and being an eyesore.

Ok for all the oil/gas nob suckers on here thinking the oil/gas companies are about anything other than making money.Fact the oil/gas companies sell they're products all over the world drilling more wells isn't going to lower the price of oil.Fractal well are short lived wells and won't last that long.

Save your money. They don't care around here.

They just want to believe that whatever pennies are thrown there way from it will make them rich, powerful Republicans.

It makes no difference to these enviro extremists if its safe or not. Their goal is to eliminate the use of all fossil fuels, to stifle growth, shrink the economy, and eliminate consumption.
