NEW MATAMORAS—Ten people were arrested during a Tuesday anti-fracking protest at a New Matamoras business, including a man who spent nearly five hours chained to a 30-foot-tall structure he erected......

There are more problems in New Mat than fracking, Where are the police who should be arresting the out of town drug dealers who sell drugs and prescription pills to Marietta residents in New Mat side Streets. It's clear the protesters only want safety. There are no jobs are available for the locals.

Watch the documentary Split Estate , then say fracking is great. ****splitestate****. To read about and it's offered on Netflix and our local Iibrary has it, so just ask your library to order it for you.

Armycorp is in error! The more responsible "resistance" to irresponsible "fracking" and "injection" operations HAS achieved some amount of success in educating the public, prompting oversight of these activities, and persuading companies to clean up their acts ... All the more reason why irresponsible "protests" like this one are not needed!

The resistance has not achieved the results it wants thru normal complaining and lobbying. It has now turned violent. Be concerned it escalates further and people get hurt.

Some rightwingers threaten people all the time, but around here it's "business-as-usual". I agree with part of what "sundrop" said. "Protesting" is one thing, but damaging property or threatening people is going too far. These "kids" are not doing their "cause" much good by acting like anarchists ... Nutjobs - whether they come from the "left" or the "right" are still nutjobs! The next time they show up, some of the REAL local environmentalists who DO care about the quality of air and water in these parts should escort these over-the-top whackos to the county line!

There is a big difference between protesting something you feel strongly about and damaging property and threatening people. There is a lot more to the story then what has been in the news. This group is dangerous and has no regard for the employees just doing their job. They have families to support. Obviously these people don't have jobs if they have time to travel all over the country to protest. I took a look at thier website and they brag about what they did and don't believe breaking the law was wrong. They also have many places to donate money for "the cause". Now who sounds fishy??

One final point - Greenhunter Water officials have made a big deal in saying that their "product" is "not radioactive", as these alleged protesters claimed. No, this toxic brine concoction NOT "radioactive", but it's chemical contents are still toxic and possibly could cause brain damage, tissue damage, or breathing problems in some persons ... IOW - BOTH the company officials AND the out-of-area "protesters" got it wrong!

Another inaccuracy in the story (which some here have noted) is that this was not an "anti-fracking" protest, but a protest of the importation of chemically-treated brine and other waste-water "products" from out-of-state. Even if the protesters were not lrgit, the problem IS! ... I find it funny that both the protesters AND the toxic-sludge they were protesting are not indigenous to this area!

discredit Defense Secretary nominee Chuck Hagel ... We'll have to see what shakes out on this unusual story! As I mentioned to BeRight, yesterday was a very strange day! ... P.S. The fact that certain "protesters" were singled-out by certain company folks is rather strange as well!

The TIMES headline was somewhat inaccurate - this was not a "local" protest! Also, why is a group called "Appalachia Resist" made up of people from places like Beverly Hills, California and Florida? ... I know of no local connections with any of the groups mentioned in the article. Either these are real eco-activists from different parts of the country who are using extreme means of protesting the very REAL problem of toxic-waste dumping, OR this was some kind of put-up job by corporate officials to depict the Greenhunter Water folks as "innocent victims" of "liberal scumbags"! In the past - i.e. in anti-war protests in the early '70s and in labor-disputes from the 1920s to the present - it is not unknown for a sleazy company to employ and use outside elements as "provocateurs" to incite violence in efforts to discredit legitimate protest movements ... Stuff happens! It's similar to using a fake "Friends of Hamas" group to di

I agree! I just read where most of the "protesters" are from out-of-state, except two allegedly from Athens County. Protesting peacefully (as some locals have done) is one thing, but sabotaging equipment is another. This thing is starting to smell fishy!

If the residents really are against fracking and believe the water is dangerous enough to ruin everyone- shouldn't it be the community who protests the company? Everyone has the right to protest but how many people actually live in the area affected? Or does New Matamoras like an outside group to do their protesting for them? It does seem strange the protestres would break in to the business grab the keys and try to stop up the toilets and scare the workers -pretty stupid way to protest.Once they get out of jail-if indeed there was room in the jail for this many people - not doubt the group will move on to the next place-and their interst in this area will fade away.

Rather strange when anti crackers suggest sabotage of equipment of O&G companies which is environmental terrorism that endangers life, the habitat and the well being of a community (note the employees knew not what the mob planned on doing nor did the police) Ever try to sue a tree hugger? No we the tax payer pays the bill!

Folks like Josh might accomplish more by going back to their bunkers and awaiting the arrival of the next over-hyped "apocalypse"!

Lol, can you imagine living like that...keeping the guns polished and ammo counted?...Wackos!!!

Why are fracking crews not "dropping like flies"? Possibly the time they spend guzzling suds at local watering holes has immunized them from the harmful effects of these chemicals - OR more likely, they bring in their own bottled-water and don't LIVE where they work!

@Nascar - A voice of reason at last! Poor Josh delusionally thinks that I responded to his silliness today because I care what he says. In reality, I saw in his grossly misinformed comments an opportunity to point out that he represents a small, mostly uninformed, group of fringies that has (for whatever reason) has attached themselves to the anti-fracking movement. Their off-the-wall allegations (i.e. that shale-gas removal "hurts property values") can do much damage to the efforts of mostly sincere, informed, efforts of REAL environmentalists to secure proper oversight of activities like hydraulic-fracturing and "injection" ... Folks like Josh might accomplish more by going back to their bunkers and awaiting the arrival of the next over-hyped "apocalypse"!

Question here, seems as if there are many experts in here so you might like to answer a few questions. As a member of a Fracking crew and our so called hazardous chemicals are so extraordinarly dangerous why is it Frac crews dropping like flies? I've been exposed to these chemicals in the home in the maintenance if the family vehicle in higher concentrations then here on a pad.

The accident in Taylor has absolutely nothing to do with fracing.

Bullsh!t...he was handling wastewater from fracking

The man was attempting to transfer briny wastewater from a tank into a truck, she said. What sparked the explosion is unclear and will be the focus of the state's investigation, already under way.

Drillers inject massive volumes of water, sand and chemicals to hydraulically fracture, or frack, the rock in which gas deposits are trapped. The gas then flows up for collection, as does the brine. The DEP says some of the chemicals in the brine could be flammable.

@Josh - You "doomsday preppers" live in your own minds. Does your opposition to "fracking" have more to do with the fear of some "back-to-the-land" folks that, if industries come into the area, it might make pot-growing in rural areas more likely to be detected by drug-enforcement agents? ... Yes, some of the folks on all sides of this issue have ulterior motives for their actions.
