Belpre mom I agree with Ask not you should not have to defend yourself to people like new world. He/ she wants to name call and pass judgement on you. I think you accomplished a lot more than many people in similar circumstances could have done. Good for you. I bet your boys ate very proud of you.

asknot, You don't know what all she has posted in the past. Seems she has left out some important details. I only have one users name and it is the same one on the N&S side. You might need more than one name to make a point, but I don't.

belpremommy, I'd ignore newworld, they are a commenter on here that has had about 1000 different names, and changes them daily, solely to derail these comment boards using hate, and very poorly thought out and worded humor. They are only here to poke, please don't poke back. There intentional mockery of the human language only adds to their annoyances, don't take the bait they throw out, sometimes even a blind squirrel finds a nut.

belpremommy, so you think you can say who gets help and who don't when you took in all the free stuff you could get? Is your middle name God?

newworld... I was a single mom who worked 50 hours a week while going to college full-time. My two older kids didn't go to preschool even though financially I could have qualified. The only assistance we received was a meager amount of food stamps and my boys had medicaid (not me). I took out student loans to pay for my degree and the only reason we had food stamps at all was because I could pay for groceries or I could pay the rent. I don't have any grievance with those who work and are trying to better their lives. My issue is with the ones who sit on their butts all day and are dependent on the system and content to stay so. Sometimes people need a hand up, such was my case. It's the "hand out's" I'm opposed to. I could have very easily dropped out of school or worked 10 hours less a week so that I would qualify for more food stamps or medicaid for myself, but I chose to work and (hopefully) set a better example for my kids.

Kids don't need preschool. Can learn ABC's and 1,2,3 from parents, siblings, Sesame street and PBS. This is just payback to teachers union for voting the hero back in for 4 more yrs.

I'd love to go back to the 50's where the father could work, and the mom could stay home with the kids(heck I'd like it even better the other way around), but we're not going back to the 50's, too many families have parents that work multiple jobs and long hours, so we have to adapt as a society. And I agree, that there are X amount of deadbeats and others taking advantage of the system, and that there needs to be something done to combat those people. But I have alot of hard working friends that receive help, and they are for the most part embarrassed to be on aid and are working to get off it. But that's not real easy and still be a parent. So I REALLY HATE the ignorance on here assuming most are the deadbeats.
And as far as going back to the 50's, I mean the 50's without the extra racism, sexism, homophobia, draft part.
WPS, WOW

I like the concept of providing more education to our kids, REGARDLESS of age. I like this proposal. Next, I think we need to restructure our ENTIRE educational system. From the top down, its become like the government, too big and too expensive for the results gained. Everything from the top down, and including the actual things being taught needs redone. I love the homeschooling idea, and would love to do it. I also think parents that choose to homeschool should receive their childs amount of money the public school would've got. Lets provide some competetion to the school system. WE need to look at Germany and Japan's models. Our kids are FALLING WAY behind the rest of the world, and thus will we as a nation.

belpremommy, I agree, I have ZERO problem with making people that receive this assistance earn it, if you can't get a job, assign them community service. If they don't do it, they don't get benefits.

myopinion, You radicals and the willingness to associate everything to communism/marxism/etc is ludicrous at best. This is a program to teach kids ABC's and 123's.

The argument that the required level of learning necessary to enter kindergarten has increased may be valid. However, what has the benefit been of accelerating the kids' education at such an early age? Certainly we aren't seeing any benefits-drop out rates are high and society is dumbing down. Maybe we need to rethink not only the proposal but the status quo....

There is no mandate in this proposal. It's making preschool available to those who might not be able to afford it. Provides un-privileged children with a jump start on education and provides low income parents with more available time to go to work. Will some take advantage? Sure.. they always do. Doesn't mean the program is without merit.

exDev says teachers are working hard because parents don't do their job. Correct! and we as a society encourage such behavior by providing everything for these parents. There have always been "deadbeat' parents. It used to be a black mark and the community knew who they were. Now, it is bragged about and highly acceptable in too many circles. CUT THE FUNDING and watch how quickly the birth rate for welfare babies drops and many parents will return to their rightful position.

Once upon a time kindergarten was something that children attended if their parents thought it was a good idea and had the money. It wasn't required. The people of that generation went on to build America. If pre-school becomes a requirement then maybe soon nursery school will become a requirement too. I see the current administration as too dictatorial and as trying to convince us that we should be homogenized and if we don't like it, then it will be forced upon us anyway. And it won't be FREE because nothing ever is.

Preschool is fine ,but I do not believe it should be a mandate, I think this should be a choice, our children grow up way too fast. If parents would be parents and work with them instead of putting them in front of the TV and IPads , video games and truly spend quality time with them , they would be much better off, we want them to be grown up almost as soon as they are born. Families enjoy your children.. Kids need to have time to be kids.

"Obama aides have said this and other new programs he's proposed will not add to the nation's nearly $16.5 trillion debt."
Yeah right! What a bunch of LIARS! Someone has to pay for it. I wouldn't trust anything anyone in the obama regime says.
Orchardfarmer I agree with you. There are too many things going on in public schools today. And the schools are no where near what schools used to be.
I would be weary of a govt. run program for 4 year olds. Especially one run by anyone in the obama regime which is probably a indoctrination program at its best.
Getting young minds early and poisoning them with liberal propaganda has been a goal of these people.

Asknot, the poor can already receive food stamps, reduced untility bills, reduced rent, prc loans, reduced child care expenses, and free health care. They can also receive help with college tuition. There are many people out there who would qualify for pell grants or state grants that would pay for all or most of a college education. I know a family of four, both parents are drug addicts, neither parent works and they receive $600 a month in food stamps! I budget, cut coupons and spends hours a week planning my grocery trip because we can't afford to spend much more than $100 a week. Why? Because we pay for our own mortgage and electric bill and student loans and preschool tuition. I'm not saying remove all help from the poor, but why not put conditions on assistance that enable a person to get out of poverty instead of making them dependent for life and a burden to the rest of us who break our backs everyday.

Working stiff do not tell me I have to pay attention to you because your opinion is warped. I agree parents should take time with their children, I read to mine constantly, and yes shock I sent them to preschool. They went to public school ,college and did well. Some parents do not teach their children, they think it is the teachers job not their, and many come to kindergarten ill prepared. One poster said to look at the kindergarten requirements , they are expected to know a lot more than when you went to school. Don't lecture me, I work part time in the school system and I see how hard teachers work because parents don't do their job.

Karl Marx, author of the Communist Manifesto wrote: "We must remove the children from the crude influence of their families. We must take them over and nationalize them. From the first days of their lives they will be under the healthy influence of Communist children's nurseries and schools. The education of all children, from the moment that they can get along without a mother's care, shall be in state institutions at state expense."

But all of you wanting to continually remove help from the poor, what do you think is going to happen when they go hungry and their kids grow up without an education?
I too wish we could just say, "hey parents, take care of your kids better, be better parents"! But that isn't realistic, even if it would be ideal!
