The issue is volume of traffic, not commercial versus private. In Pittsburgh, they need a control tower. In Parkersburg, they never did need a tower.

So why is there a tower at Parkersburg? Can you say Robert C Byrd? Or just name any of the Democrat or Republican legislators who voted for each others’ small airport control tower appropriations requests over the past 40 years. They wanted to brag they were “bringing home the bacon”.

But who paid for that bacon? Joe taxpayer. Certainly there was a need to provide up-to-date control towers at large airports like Pittsburgh and Columbus where traffic is overwhelmingly large. But there was no need to squander taxpayer money on many small airports around the country -- 148 of which were identified for tower closure in the sequester.

Permanently close the Parkersburg, Wheeling, and Lewisburg control towers now. These towers were never needed. Staffing these towers is sapping away money needed by the taxpayer.

This airport has lost its reason for being commercial some time ago. Commercial Flights were supported by corporate travelers to GE, DuPont and other plants in the area that just don’t allow their employees to travel much anymore. Citizen flights on scheduled routes such as what US Air used to run to Pittsburgh daily have dropped off to the point where an airline can’t make a profit. Bite the bullet and make it a private airport. Quit living in the past.
