Dr. Brockett is the health commissioner for the Marietta City Health Dept. Dr. Leopold is a Washington County Board of Health member and the only 1 with medical training and experience. The other 4 board members have no training or experience in public health, ie. vaccines, infectious disease management, septic system inspections, food licenses, or birth/death certificates. I hope better members are found and soon!

The trouble with many of these boards is that unqualified and ignorant people are on them. They are political appointments, when they should be about expertise in the field and service to the community. What qualifies any of these men to be on a governing board for ensuring public health? Besides Dr. Brockett, are any of them in the health field? Are any of them experienced in any of the services offered by the County Health Department? No, they are not. Contrary to what many locals believe, the good old boy system is not used everywhere. Where it is not used, there tends to be consistent progress, improvement, growth.

"Apparently the board isn't competent." You hit the nail on the head, Tessie. They are more about talking a problem to death and less about making decisions and acting on them. These board members are appointed by the township trustees, not elected. Only 1 board member has any medical background; the rest are older retired men who worked in unrelated fields. There are no term limits, so the same people sit on the board for decades without truly understanding what public health does. They get paid $80 per meeting. I think the board of health members should be elected by county citizens, have a term limit, and then be off the board for a certain time limit.

"And non-compliance with regulations of one grant could impact other grant funding, too," Farnsworth cautioned. "But this has been an issue since December, and appointment of a full-time administrator has come before the board several times."

The board agreed that it would have to put the hiring of a full-time administrator on a fast-track to try and meet the June 3 deadline for compliance with the grant requirements."

Sounds to me like the board should have been acting on finding a replacement as soon as Dr. Meckstroth was "retired". They are who will be responsible when people lose their jobs and the residents of Washington County lose their health department. Apparently the board isn't competent. They had 6 months in which to hire a permanent replacement and they failed to act. Let's hold them accountable.
