Appearance of Greene St. needs some work

June 20, 2013

Visiting downtown Marietta on Wednesday, Velma Kee noted a difference between the atmosphere on Front Street and the 100 block of Greene Street, just around the corner....

The pathway into Marietta- off the interstate, through "hamburger way" is horribly unattractive. It is like she said, and everyone has known for years, the ONLY street that is Marietta appears to be Front street. Nothing else matters. And, how do you get tenants when the buildings look like crap and are deteriorating? Who will rent from you?

I tried calling about one of the buildings a few weeks ago and got no reply! I know things look bleak on greene but I am willing to start the ball rolling. That is of course if rents are reasonable and improvements will be made! I also think some of the owners dont care as much as they say they do.

"I'll do the work when I get a tenant." SERIOUSLY?! No one is going to rent a pile of crap. Clean it up, sling some paint, and your chances of renting increase dramatically. Ignorance!

Don't forget that piece of crap property in Tiber Way that used to be the Legion. It was supposed to be demolished years ago. I believe that the Thomas family owns it too.

Every building Thomas owns looks like crap. "It takes a lot of cash to fix these buildings". Then be responsible and SPEND "some" of your moldy money and do the right thing. Your properties are a disgrace to the entire city of beautiful Marietta. Especially downtown!!!! Who in their right mind would even consider renting from you??? You should be ashamed. Paint doesn't cost THAT much. If you aren't willing to step up, then sell them for a reasonable price. Please.

We don't need more street lamps. We need to fix those remaining cross walks downtown. I think that the Butler/Front crosswalk is fantastic compared to the others that are broke & bumpy. Please fix those before bying more street lights.

The City needs to come down hard on these property owners.They need to fine them till they fix them up of put a lean on the properties****mercial property is about making money if they can't afford the property then they need to sell it.I like the line they said " I will fix it up when I have a tenet" what kind of BS is that. Marietta is a great city we need to kick the scumbag slumlords to the curb with the rest of the trash.

Front Street always has been the showplace for Marietta with the hanging flower baskets,the brick streets,and the store display windows attractively designed.There is no excuse for a lack of paint or effort made."Waiting for a tenant"is just an excuse not to pay out the money.Some of the occupied city buildings on Putnam Street need paint too on the outside so what's the excuse for that?

I must say- the 2004 flood changed everything on Greene Street when Rossi Pasta could not negotiate damage claims with the then owner- instead of a historical site it is now what it is...no dis-respect intended. Very imperfect world at times.

Tina Thomas is not a "scumbag" nor is she a "slumlord". Finding suitable tenants for the downtown buildings is, no doubt, a challenging endeavor. There are so many empty sites throughout the city and that's just a reflection of the economic climate we're in. When everyone started shopping at Walmart and started eating at Applebees and other chain restaurants, Main Streets across this country fell into disarray.

@TheMagicMuskie When the new city ordinance come out this fall she won't have a choice but to repair or be fined and then a lean against her properties.If she is to poor which I'm sure she is then she needs to sell her properties and get out of the big peoples game and go back to renting homes.

When you live in a county, a region that is sparsely populated, like Southeastern Ohio--there are few laws on the books, little in the way of zoning controls (just look what can get built and where in that little place called Beverly) probably more than a little resistance to establishing an historic district with strong compliance to maintenance and repair. A city like Marietta has a lot of history to sell and not much else. When you present a shabby appearance to visitors--your losing tourists and dollars to other locations. How well I remember what Christmas in Marietta once was--all that retail, those local merchants..now gone, mostly gone. Too bad--Marietta has much to offer.

I agree Rt 60 by the hospital is an eyesore, they are 90% HUD houses and the landlords make enough to clean them up and get good tenants that will pay without HUD. As for the comment re: downtown at Christmas, last year at the merchant's Christmas walk overheard several shoppers being disappointed with the non Christmas Spirit of the stores and the Jazz, hip hop music being played in most. Maybe the store owners need to rethink their persona.

If you try and sell a residential property, you do everything you can to make it look inviting. You get rid of the clutter, paint and fix obvious defects. Why should business owners not do the same ? Greene and Pike streets do not look good , as do many other streets. These owners should take pride in their property .Painting , mowing and picking up trash should be an easy and relatively inexpensive fix, or is it not your job as a property owner?

Front Street shines because several business owners have reinvested their time and money and teamed together for years to build up the street as a source of quality merchandise and good service. Their persistence helped attract city support.

It hasn’t been easy. The flood that hit Greene Street in 2004 also hit Front Street. Three serious fires also hit Front Street. Yet there they are, still tickin’.

Don’t waste city money on Greene Street. Wait for innovative business owners there pull themselves up (or sell to someone else who will). If the city wants to make a better impression on visitors, the council should squarely address the problem of a goosepoop-covered Ohio Street levee and bandshell. What an eyesore and stinkin’ mess! The solution to this city attractiveness problem could be quite simple and inexpensive, including an ordinance enforced against people who feed the wild geese within city limits.

Ive sunk thousands of dollars into the appearance of The Locker Room at 217-219 Greene, all new front glass a few years back, more recently the red led lighting and a new awning. Marietta offers a reimbursement for my area from taxpayer $$ but I didn't feel it was right to take city $$ to do that sort of thing. Now the sidewalk in front of my building could be renovated, but given the low cost rentals immediately to the right of me, that no one wants to do anything with, and the old 4seasons building falling apart right before our eyes, and owner(s) of these properties choosing to let them fall to the ground rather than 'sell at any price' the city of Marietta sadly is without hope seemingly on this street.

The City/Counsel wont enforce cleaning up any empty dilapidated eyesores.....it's most likely owned by an "influential" friend of theirs..... or.....if they manage to get one hazardous, corner lot snake pit by the river torn down.....that person will cause "problems" for "those influential friends"..... grow a spine!!

DMC, the city council is not responsible for enforcing the property standards, the city administration is. That's why Mr. Kalter's mission has been to update the property codes to current 2012 standards, instead of remaining with 14 year old, outdated codes. AND this also will include funding the position for a qualified person to inspect the buildings and issue citations. Everyone seems to want to "bad-rap" Roger, however he is doing a great deal to help residents of the city. You're either part of the problem or you're part of the solution. So if you aren't part of the solution, get out of the way of those who are.

Maybe if some grant monies were to flow to Green Street like they did Front Street Green could be better looking too! After all the owners didn't pay for the fancy cross walks and the fancy street Lamps on Front street why should Green be different?
