Some people just need a real bad emergency to knock the stupid off of them. The EMA office not only functions during a flood but they map and inform firemen of hazardous materials in factories and such most of the funding is grants and homeland security we of Washington County should be thankful to have a well seasoned hard working Director that worked out of a janitors closet with out complaining even when the closet was in flood plain! I say thank you commissioners for stepping up and making it happen and to the Director thank you for doing your job so well please know some of us appreciate all you have done.

Another waste of money. In a real emergency count on no one including this emergency command center.

It gives people a false sense of security. Take control of your own safety. Some guy running around in a truck and a command center will not help you much.

The first thought that comes to my mind, What are the risks and consequences? Is it worth spending "our" limited tax money on "emergencies" that only happen once every 100 years, 500 years, or even 1000 years?

Also, if we spend on this then what will we give up or not spend tax $$ on? We should be thinking that we have a limit to the tax revenue spending. However, we only think "grants" are free and come from some magical place.

We need to be honest with ourselves. We can not afford to try and plan for every "emergency". At the very least, we need to measure the risk and consequences, then work on the derived highest risks and consequences only. The available overall resources (tax $$ from all gov. levels) will dictate how many of these priorities we can work on or fund.

Yes, I know. Our biggest problem is that we can not agree on the priorities... :o/

@ elliott and gingr it's all in the article...

Both facilities are currently located at the Washington County Courthouse. In the past, either a sheriff's office conference room or a room in the courthouse annex have been used during emergency situations but they don't have the space necessary for use by all agencies. The Ohio EMA has been urging each county to have a designated, permanent EOC to use as a communications center during emergencies.

Just a repeat of the 9/11 debacle when the New York City emergency command center (and mayor's bunker!) were forced to evacuate the basement of the World Trade Center! Who'd have thought such a thing in Marietta, which is usually prepared for the unexpected? Don't they have a Sheriff's emergency location in Barlow next to the fire department? Why is it never used?

Well, mattelliott, I can't exactly tell you what it is, but we're getting it because what we have is never enough. We're always looking for more and better. And we love paying for more maintenance and upkeep--to go along with all the maintenance and upkeep we already have.
