No task is easier to complete than for the person who does not have to plan or do the work himself. The tourist didn’t see a “boarded-up” town. Even more impressive, he saw ongoing renovation to improve crosswalk safety downtown. A closer look past whizzing traffic and into the “cloud of concrete dust” would have revealed a city crew working hard to complete the job safely. Were a weeks-long time-lapse view available from behind the city project planner’s desk, one might have noticed the many obstacles to getting this job done in time for Sternwheel weekend – obstacles including a summer work schedule greatly compressed by excessive rain days.

A better opportunity to improve our welcome to boat-borne tourists, whether they arrive on the “Gem” or on the “Queen”, would be a low cost program that keeps the riverwalk trail and levee driveway clean of disgusting waterfowl poop -- perhaps a program that greatly diminishes the presence of waterfowl in that area, year-round.
