If the prosecutor ever needs a career change, I hear the car lots on the Pike are always looking for people who are good at dealing....

Not having the victim testify is probably a good thing for her but other than that I can see no reason why to let this dirtbag plea down to such a lesser charge.

I understand not wanting to put the victim on the stand with being so young...why couldn't she be questioned in the judges chambers so this dirtbag couldn't plea to lesser charges??...

I agree with NASCAR / wouldn't that be better than dropping the rape charge and letting this predator out? Hopefully no one will bail him out. That way we would know he'd show up for trial why are there do many people like himin Washington county ? And why offer them plea deals/ does anyone not get one? If it is to save us from having overcrowded jails maybe we need some more. This guy obviously belongs there.

And this is why we have so many repeat offenders in this area. Stop letting scum like this plead down to a lesser offense. Ohio, and other states, needs to make laws to where the victim, if under a certain age, can testify to just the judge and lawyers, so as to save them from facing "men" like this in a court room.I hope, when he gets to prison, the other inmates find out what he's serving time for. They'll be sure to make up for the courts allowing him to plea bargain.

Nascar..It really isn't as simple as the judge talking to the child in chambers. The Jury has to hear the testimony or it is not admissible as evidence. The reason that they plead these down to the lesser offense is because the child would have to testify in court. The defendant has the right to cross-examine the victim in an attempt to mitigate the defendant's guilt in this case. The defense attorney would more than likely ask her all sorts of questions to try and make her look like the instigator and a tramp. I, for one, would not want to put my daugther through that and would also welcome the plea deal.

We need this in our town since it seems to be full of pedos...

states are increasingly passing laws that protect children from further victimization by allowing special accommodations for giving testimony. There are some states that allow judges to accept testimony using closed circuit television.  The child cannot see the defendant while testifying.  Most states have a Victim Specialist or equivalent who works for the court. The specialist will meet with the child before a court appearance to help the child become familiar with the court process. Many times a judge that requires a child to testify may decide to have the child give his or her testimony in the judge’s chambers. The judge can also decide if attorneys should be present during the testimony. The judge is interesting in limiting trauma and has a lot of discretion in this matter.

But what about the right of each man or woman to face his/her accuser?

Good thing that fat pig did not do that to my daughter or son, there would be no rape trial, only a murder trial, mine! I hope whatever time he does is not fun and full of him being abused! Forgive me Lord!

This is extremely sad and our hearts are with this family. Thankfully this guy will be in jail and away from kids for a while, but the laws in Ohio are way to child predator friendly.

Let's hope that anyone who may have knowledge or may have been harmed by Richard L. Newlen, will find the courage and strength to come forward and contact law enforcement, no matter how long ago your abuse happened. It is extremely rare that a child predator has only one victim. Some have many. Child predators need to be kept far away from kids forever. Keep in mind your silence only hurts, and by speaking up there is a chance for healing, exposing the truth, and therefore protecting others.

How do defense attorney's stand there before a judge with a straight face? Do they not care about what the criminal standing beside of them did? If not, hopefully this is a sign that they are not reproducing.

The lawyers stand there beside these slimy, scum sucking, worthless pieces of crap because it's their job to do so. Everyone has a right to a defense.

I would prefer that the courts stop allowing pleas deals on any and all sex crimes, but especially those in which the victim is a child. Court rooms can be closed while the child testifies. It can be very empowering for a victim to testify against the one who sexually abused her, raped her. I can understand wanting to protect your child from further trauma, but in so doing, you allow this man to get out sooner so that he can do the same or worse to the next child.

This slime ball is a manipulative creep that deserves to rot in prison and not in protective custody either.(sorry) His g/f is still defending him, she thinks he's innocent and still believes that the girls family are causing trouble. This is denial, I don't know what kind of crap he is still feeding her, but I would think that once you plead guilty to something, obviously you're guilty. I surely wouldn't plead guilty to anything if I wasn't guilty. Wake up People. It's sickening to think that my boyfriend, who professes his undying love for me, would tell a 12 year old that he would rather have sex with her than his girlfriend. Forgot about plea bargains and dropping this charge for that charge, keep all the dam* charges and give him 50 years not 5!! Just my opinion. (oops)
