August 19, 2013

If you look at the rest of the aluminum smelters in the United States, they pay an average of 37.00 per Megawatt Hour for power. AEP wants to raise Ormets from 39.66 to 62.83. Who is the bad guy here. AEP is doing this to everyone. I just switched from paying AEP 9 cents per kw/hr to IGS where I pay 6.49 cents per kw/hr. After I switched AEP told me if I cam back, I could get the same rate. Why didn't they offer me that before I switched. If AEP let's Ormet go under, we will all pay for it. Why not just offer something in between.

Ok I got a question..where will Aep go to get the money they lose when ormet goes down? Ormet consumes over half of what they make

Is this the same crowd that decided not to work and shut the plant down some time ago? I guess that did not hurt so much. So, now that someone else is doing it, what is the problem?

It's a shame so many companies are going under. Our local AEP plant will soon be gone, let's not forget that either. I do find it funny that the local union is crying that the governor isn't helping. Wonder why? They spread lies and spend millions to elect his opponent. Not saying it's right but I get it.

I agree, when do us peons get our utilities subsidized??...Ormet has been catching a break since 2009, if they didn't spend or invest their savings wisely too's time to pay the piper...

I feel for Ormet, I really do...BUT here is what was in the Columbus Dispatch:

The biggest customer of American Electric Power in Ohio, Ormet has been the beneficiary of a unique electricity-rate subsidy that has reduced its costs by more than $150 million since 2009. It’s the largest such benefit in the state for a single company.

Despite this special deal, one that is paid for by all American Electric Power customers, Ormet says it needs more help to avoid a big layoff.

I'm already helping Ormet with their electric rate and now they want MORE? Who is going to help me with MY electric bill?? How much more can consumers carry?
