Harry Robinson deserves our total gratitude for organizing and sponsoring the fireworks. This noisiest half hour has become our biggest event of the year and a source of Marietta pride. Kudos, too, for pairing music with the pyro display; gutsy and innovative.

Some people enjoy the music. But some don’t. It would be interesting to see a survey showing what percentage of people enjoy the music, how many don’t care, and how many dislike it.

Let’s assume that 50% like the music, 30% don’t care either way, and 20% dislike it. If you knew that, would you still take your boombox to the viewing area and turn it way up so that everyone could hear the music? Or would you leave the boombox at home and bring your earphones so that everyone else could enjoy the fireworks show to the max right along with you?

Fireworks disturb those who don't appreciate them. They are overused for every possible celebration and beyond the pollution (air and noise) they are dangerous. Every year the 4th of July finds someone injured or killed because of them. What I hate the most is that they scare birds from their nests and animals can become so frightened that, if not kept indoors, they can become permanently traumatized. I say "NO" to all fireworks. But, that's only my personal opinion.

Asknot: My comment goes beyond the celebration in Marietta, and was meant to address the fact that fireworks are used for almost every type of celebration imagined. The wealthy even use them for weddings now. And if you think birds aren't still on their nests at night, where do you think they are? Do they just dissolve after hatching their eggs and go away? My pets are all inside pets anyway to keep them safe from every possible outside danger and to not annoy any neighbors. I think it's sad that a celebration that could be just as fun has to add the noise and air pollution of fireworks. Again, as in my last comment, my OWN opinion and you are entitled to yours also.

I love fire works. Every time I enjoy them I think of ALL of our veterans that fought and died and suffered disabilities for those of us in this country to be free. I can almost imagine being at a civil war battle like the War of 1812 when the Star Spangled Banner was written,
