November 13, 2013

The city of Cambridge has become a popular Christmastime destination in recent years, and some folks in Marietta want the Pioneer City to follow in its footstep....

I think you have hit the nail on the head. I think Marietta should do something downtown along these lines, but lets make it unique, lets make it our own. This town has a long history of innovation, lets find a way to improve upon their model if not make a new one ourselves. We have a much livelier downtown than Cambridge does, this would be another hook to get people to see it.

Before I-70 replaced U.S.40 life in downtown Cambridge was well, lively. Before men and women of my late father's generation came along and couldn't see the viability of any place where you couldn't park in front of the business--Cambridge like so many other smaller towns in Ohio were alive, had some purpose and not just to fill up store fronts with the contents of Great Aunt Minnie's attic--Ye Olde Junk Shoppe. Cambridge has done well with it's version of the much larger Festival of Lights at Oglebay, that wonderful civic park created from the estate of Earl Oglebay of Wheeling, which is one of the great gems of the tri state area, if not the entire region. Cambridge had a great boost to it's endeavour from the success of Oglebay and Ohio County's Christmas time event.

Would be nice to see Marietta get back to the spirit of Christmas but not just Front Street. Infact it should be Putnam Street the street that connects the East to the West. Or Second Street the center of town.

Instead of saying what Marietta shouldn't do, how about some suggestions about what it should do?

A skydiving Santa to open festivities might be a good idea.

I think this is a great idea and would love to help out with this committee. It would be fun to see Marietta the way it was when I was a kid. Lots of good memories!

Copying what Cambridge does shouldn't be the goal. Being open to creative ideas that are unique to Marietta needs to be the goal. Marietta needs a focal point as part of its "brand", such as the confluence of the Muskingum and Ohio Rivers, to build upon.

Cambridge has a beautiful display at Christmastime. But Marietta now has a much more vibrant downtown than Cambridge. Grant Hafley was instrumental in creating the light show at the Courthouse.
